Wedding Mezuzah

A wedding mezuzah is generally a gift, given to the bride and groom by a guest. A wedding mezuzah has interesting colors and designs in it. For those who don't know, a mezuzah is placed on the doorpost of a Jewish home. There is two parts to the mezuzah - a case, and a Shema. The Shema, or scroll, is inside the case. The Shema reminds us to follow God in his teachings.

Can I make my own mezuzah, to be gifted at a wedding?

It is possible to make your own wedding mezuzah. There are some people out there who make their own, however, mezuzahs generally have jewels encrusted in them. A jeweler may be abl to make you a mezuzah, but unless they have done it before, they likely won't know what they're doing. Try your local yellow pages for "mezuzah," and see if you find anyone who makes
them. You will have better luck in areas that have Jewish businesses.

I have a mezuzah but I need a Shema to put in it. What do I do?

A shema is not something you can make yourself. The shema is an important piece and yes, you need to put one inside the mezuzah if you are planning on gifting it at a wedding. Luckily, we have shema scrolls here as well that you can purchase if you are looking for one. Purchasing a mezuzah for a couple without a shema can sometimes be a pain, because finding a shema
that fits can be a task. It's better to purchase everything at once, and avoid any confusion.
